The Light Festival Lux Helsinki, organised from Saturday 5 January to Wednesday 9 January 2019, will offer inspiring light artworks in Helsinki city centre.

The official Lux Helsinki route with twelve installations has been designed as a dramaturgical series that should be seen in numerical order from start to finish.

However, if you don't have time for a full round, here are our recommendations:

Tim Etchells: We Wanted

Where: Central Library Oodi
When: 5–9 January 2019 5 p.m.–10 p.m.

Tim Etchells (UK) uses neon and LED lamps to create light sculptures that explore the playful and poetic nature of language. With his simple illuminated texts, he wants to create stories, stir emotions and cause confusion.

XYZ & Antti Nykyri: GRID

Where: Tunturikatu 1
When: 5–9 January 2019 5pm–10 pm

"GRID utilises laser mapping technology that has never before been used in Finland on such a scale. The geometric shapes and forms created by the lasers bring a six-metre wooden frame to life. The installation has been created by light artists Pekka Korpi and Otto Suojanen of XYZ Designs, and its sound design and music are by sound artist Antti Nykyri."

After Lux Helsinki: Art & Cocktail Art at Wintergarden Restaurant & Bar

After admiring the light artwork outside, we recommend enjoying a hot cup of coffee or an artisan cocktail at Hotel St. George's magical Wintergarden Restaurant & Bar - a place to stay, relax and spend time with friends.

And if Lux Helsinki didn't already satisfy your art cravings, there are some 400 pieces of art also at Hotel St. George.

You'll find for example Tianwu by Chinese artist and human rights activist Ai WeiWei in the entrance hall and the six-meter metal culpture Learning to Fly by Pekka Jylhä in Wintergarden.
