ART GALLERY AT ST. GEORGE BAKERY
1st of September 2022 -
Marita Kouhia
Starting from September, you can dive into Marita Kouhia's art in the cafe of St. George Bakery. Take a moment for yourself with a freshly baked pastry, coffee or a glass of wine - and enjoy the art that surrounds you.
"I don’t think art should always be beautiful or reflect life. The most interesting part of it is the world we can’t see and prove. That’s where the art starts to shine as it’s duty. The art’s personality comes from the combined layers of the story, opposite side, creator, and viewer. But how ever it is beautiful or ugly, scary, or touchy, peaceful, or aggressive, relaxing or hyperactivating, about the past, present, or futuristic point of view, Art must move people, or it is pointless."
Marita Kouhia is independent artist and master graduated designer. She is known with her colorful and expressive work of art. She has travelled a lot and the cultural richness has influenced her work.
"I am concerned about discrimination that happens in the world and I wish to affect the public with my sense of equality and support toward minorities without losing my sense of humor or judging people who don’t think like me. It is a lifelong journey of learning. I think only with positive behavior towards the things we don’t understand and follow we can make a difference and start the conversation to open our mindsets and find the compromise that leads towards understanding", Kouhia says.
She paints different subjects from abstract feelings to figurative portraits. Kouhia thinks that there is a lot to be found on human faces and postures. For her a face is a landscape of person’s history and faith. She believes that face can reflect all the intentions, feelings, past and the future, greatness and evil of the human. Her vibrant portraits of the artists from the music business shows her passion towards that culture. In her installations and sculptures, she uses recycled or ecological materials only which is her way to support sustainable development.
"I need to go back to nature to balance myself regularly. I need to feel that I belong to this world and nature and remind myself that I am only small part of it nothing more, nothing less. My other side is adventurous, and I love to enjoy life and fill it with laughter, music, fun and new things. I’m curious and I like things that make me laugh. As much I can get very serious about some things, I can easily be light and hedonic. I think these both sides can be seen in my art as well."
At St. George Kouhias work is represented at the Bakery’s and the way to the Boon Nam restaurant hallway walls. The exhibition is now a collection of work from the different subjects and time. It is a retrospective of Kouhias art from past 10 years. The subjects are individual and not in context with each other. This is very identifiable at her work. She likes to put all her energy and consciousness to one work at a time rather than study it repeatably with versions. She is now working with art pieces of the new exhibition opening for St. George gallery in the beginning of year 2023.
The subjects of the art work moves from the subconscious mind to the snapshot’s of a life’s meaningful moments that makes us who we are. Kouhia believes art don’t need to be explained too much. It should be able to tell everything needed to know about it itself.
